Lewes women's rugby vs Hampstead - 18 April 2010Most good match reports kick off by drawing the reader into a pre-match sensory overload of deep heat and rugby poo. But this observer, girls and boys, was so busy asking a jewish family in NW11 for directions to Hayward’s Heath, that she missed the first 10 mins of the game...[cough]

In which time, apparently Hampstead had put two balls over the Lewes tryline. I’ve no idea whether they were converted or not, but let’s assume one went over, and the other didn’t. That seems fair.

So we join the match somewhere around the 8th minute...and Lewes were back on their tryline guarding a charging Hampstead attack with gusto. I should point out that Hampstead went into this match unbeaten all season, with promotion already secured. A 5-metre scrum saw a determined Lewes forward pack excelling in holding off any real Hampstead gain, until the ball finally popped out straight into the hands of a searingly fast Hampstead outside centre, we’ll call her ‘Jones’, who left the other 29 players trailing in her slipstream as she went over for Hampstead’s third (and 5 more besides, but let’s not dwell).

But despite the score at this stage (whatever it was – let’s say 17-0), it wasn’t all one-sided. Hampstead showed particular weakness in the restarts, dropping the ball and allowing Lewes to capitalise on several occasions. In addition, many a Hampstead ball was held onto on the ground, allowing Captain Rab ‘Arsey’ Willis to work her penalty magic - slyly propelling prop Aimee ‘bring it on’ Day straight at Hampstead’s imposing opposite number. Ali ‘Chickenlegs’ Hannon also brought down the same player twice – proving that it’s not the size that matters, it’s what you do with it that counts. Lewes’ other prop Charlotte ‘don’t touch me’ Tucker did well to stop the Hampstead forwards from making any significant gains on many occasions.

In open play, Lewes’ centres made good ground, with inside centre Jen ‘Flea bug’ Laing bulldozing several Hampstead players through the middle. Heather ‘OOOOOOOOOOOOW!’ Shaw deserves a mention just for the sheer number of tackles she put in, even if they were a touch..ahem... high...

Hampstead’s notorious #8 did well on the break, going over for a pedestrian two tries (pedestrian by her usual standards..), indeed, the scoreline would have been much higher were it not for ‘fearless’ full-back Jo Murray, and her deft tackling. Susie Smale and Laura ‘Whoopsie’ Belsham also played out of their skins to drive the opposition back several times. In fact, defensively, Lewes had the best game of their campaign with every player digging deep to stop Hampstead making significant gains up the pitch. For a 15 minute period, Lewes even dared to trespass in Hampstead’s half, with Ruth ‘Rufus’ Perry breaking free for a good 10-15 metres with a blinding run along the left wing. Right-wingers (not in the political sense I should point out...) Cathy and Cat both made some excellent break-saving tackles.

The support from Lewes’ forwards, including the hungover Bevendean massive - hooker Jade Carter and second rows Carol ‘Canada’ Moore and Robynne ’Robweiner’ Keen were consistently there. Even mummy and daddy Keen thought so. Ah, bless!

New player Georgie "Not So Dopey After All" Kemp, who came into hook as the pack shifted round made an immediate impact with some solid tackling – earning her forward of the match –and Sonya Da Silva a free pint post-match!

The game ended 58-0 to Hampstead. But the high score was largely borne out of well-rehearsed breaks by the Hampstead 8 and 13, as opposed to any set piece play. Lewes can therefore hold their heads high, as they provided an unwavering force against which at least 12 of the 15 Hampstead ladies struggled to contend with. That said, the Londoners thoroughly deserved the league title, and will be a formidable opponent in SEW league 1 next season.

For Lewes, it marked the end of their 2009-10 campaign and a hugely well-deserved SECOND place in the league!!

Lewes Colts vs Heathfield & Waldron Colts
Score: 12 - 10
Match report by Aidan Byrne

Lewes Colts had a very good win over Heathfield in the Sussex Colts U18 Cup semifinals side held in the Stanley Turner Ground. In the last encounter between the two sides Lewes ran out comfortable winners – however this was a different Heathfield. They have five new players from the public schools in their side and they added a sizable weight and height advantage to their pack.

Lewes started well with the kickoff being fielded nicely by Aaron White and passed to Hillman who ran straight. Quick ball along the line ended with Charlie one on one with the winger who put in a despairing tackle to stop him. Heath conceded a penalty from the ensuing ruck and this set the pattern for the first half. Nice runs from the Lewes full back Byrne were unfortunate not to have ended with a score however the last pass did not connect and good defensive play by Heathfield prevented Lewes crossing the try line. Billie Filmer had an excellent game as hooker and did all the hard work for the opening try running from the back of a lineout, stepping the Heath outhalf was tackeled just short of the try line and Hillman pushed past two defenders to finish it off. Then Harte made a break that was completed off by Billie, Harte converted.

Heathfield had the final word in the first half with a converted try just before half time. Turning around at half time 12 – 7 it was all to play for with the decision still in the balance. Many of the attempts of open play running by the big Heath side were stopped by good defensive tackles. Sam Peate proved what a great full stop he was putting in some crunching tackles in the centre. When Stuart Diplock substituted him in the second half he proved he was also equal to the task. A preplanned move which saw the Heath full back trying to barge through a hole in the centers was stopped with Stu planting him into the middle of next week with an excellent textbook tackle. Lewes were unfortunate to have conceded a penalty in front of the posts - neatly slotted by the Heathfield full back who had an good kicking game.

The last ten minutes were spent on the Heathfield 22 with their defense very strong in stopping another Lewes score. At full time Lewes were hammering on the Heathfield try line with a typical silky run from the Captain George Dean. This “silky run” consisted of George going towards the try line like an oil tanker with seven of the opposition trying to pull him down.

So next weekend Lewes Colts are either in the playoffs for the league – or the final of the U18 Cup. Sorry we don’t know because of fixture congestion – but as soon as we know what is going on we will let you know.

An enjoyable day for all with Lewes under 8s and under 10s victorious

Lewes Under 12s - Lewes Minis Festival

Under 12s report

The day started really well with a spirited defence against the eventual tournament winners Hove, holding them to a single try victory, their lowest of the day! The forwards contested the breakdown well and the backs kept a good line both in defence and attack.

The next game against Uckfield was not our best effort, the fact that they were assisted by three talented players on loan from East Grinstead went some way to explain the 10:5 defeat.

The following game against Hastings, who had only lost to Hove 5:10, was   a return to a better style of rugby. Good support play, with the forwards getting quality ball out to the backs. The eventual score of 25:5 reflected our better frame of mind.

The final game against East Grinstead was a re-run of our Sussex Festival Semi Final, with an identical score. We had some good runs of play and certainly won the last quarter when we were only denied further tries by a desperate East Grinstead defence. The high point in this game was despite being down a couple of tries down we continued to play with determination and spirit. The final scoreline was 20:10.

A good effort by the U12's who have a solid base to build on for the advance to U13 rugby nex t season.
