Saturday 21 November

Seaford  v Lewes 3rd XV
Score: 15 -5
Report by Steve Jackson

A combination of Lewes Vets and the 3rd XV visited Seaford to play their predominantly Vets side. The game was very competitive from the off as you would expect from local rivals. Seaford took the game to Lewes from the off piling the pressure on the Lewes line, with Lewes defending it strongly. Seaford’s bigger and stronger pack told though in the end with powerful forwards play scoring to take the lead 5-0.

Lewes then woke up a little with strong breaks from veteran scrum half Nick Rourke aided by open side flanker Neil Harrison getting quickly to the breakdown, but the score remained the same to the break. The second half saw Lewes come into the game more putting a little more pressure on the Seaford full back who coped with it very well showing all his experience. Seaford added to their score going 10- 0 in the lead with some missed tackles from Lewes allowing the forwards of Seaford to dominate again. The Lewes backs now got into the match more passing very well with fly half Gareth Pond scoring a fine solo try to make the score 10 5. All the Seaford experience told in the end, adding to their lead to go 15-5 up. Lewes can take pride, though, in holding up on the line a number of times to keep the score down. Without the missed kicks from Lewes however the score could have been different. In the end Seaford’s stronger, larger team and experience was the difference .

Man of the match for Lewes was scrum half Nick Rourke.

Next week Lewes visits Horsham for a friendly.

Sunday 22 November

Lewes Ladies v Tottonians Ladies
Score: 15 - 7
Report by Rab Willis

Against all odds, the ladies game at Lewes went ahead as planned, despite a biting hail storm minutes before kick-off that momentarily turned two teams of tough rugby ladies into a bunch of screaming girls. Back in the zone, the rain held off but the cold wind and extreme mud added to the many challenges to be faced on the pitch. Tottonians forwards were quick and strong but they were no match for the feisty Lewes forwards. Aimee Day’s spirited defence won many balls over and the support from other forwards such as Robynne Keen and Ali Hannon made the Lewes line impassable. Lucy Tyrrell hit hard with some penetrating attacks off the flank and allowed the ball to recycle over and over in possession providing Lewes with a rare exhibition of organisation for the majority of the game.

A change in the back line put Heather Shaw at fly-half, a move that put Lewes up by two tries in the first half. The first, scored by scrum-half Sonja Da Silva and the second, scored by Shaw, achieved through quick thinking and sharp reaction to the opposition’s dawdling defence. The backs displayed some superb moves, despite the difficult weather for handling, and were rewarded again in the second half by the powerful crashing through of inside centre Jen “Flea Bug” Laing. Tottonians were powerless to stop her try, the third try in a series from the third back in the line - it was clearly meant to be!

Despite a gap in the defence allowing Tottonians a hard-won try, Lewes ladies left the pitch with a well-deserved team win.

Next game is away next Sunday at Marlow RFC: 2pm kick-off

Youth

Eastbourne U15 v Lewes U15
Score: 5 - 35
Report by: Declan Dickens

A great result for the U15s in a hastily arranged friendly. All credit to Lewes U15s who had  brilliant game where they could do no wrong and this when a significant part of the squad were ruled out from play as they were attending Sussex trials at Brighton.

Crowborough U13s v Lewes U13s
Score: 41 -10
Sussex League
Report by Ron Sillett

It was wet, it was muddy, it was windy and flu and injuries too their toll, but what a great game despite Crowborough proving to be just that little bit stronger scoring four tries and two being converted in the first half. Lewes came to life in the second half with some good back play giving William Powell a chance to use his speed resulting in 50 metre run giving the final pass to Ollie Berry Hill to score in the corner. The next play with some great forward work created the same back move resulting in William Powell using his speed to go all the way to the try line. Crowborough then got their second wind and scored three tries with some very bad tackling from Lewes.

Robert Fogerty and James Mckeown playing his first game at no 8 both played to a high standard of rugby in the very bad conditions.
