Lewes makes a big impression at Woodford 7s
Match report by Dereck Wade
On Saturday, Lewes 1st XV made the long trip to Woodford, Essex, to play in the home Club’s inaugural 7-a-side Tournament.
In warm and sunny conditions, Lewes made an impression in their opening matches, winning their Pool in some style in beating Bee Team 43 – 17; Woodcutters 68 – 7; and Merlin 36 – 19.
In their quarter-final match, however, Lewes were unlucky to come up against Woodford-based outfit Feel the Love, who`s heavier side contained several of their first-team players, and not surprisingly the now-tiring Sussex side were beaten 10 – 23.
Nevertheless this was a good performance by a young Lewes squad, whose standard of play and team spirit reflected the fine season they have just completed, and which augurs well for the future.

Crowborough Colts vs Lewes Colts
Score: 0 - 63
Match report by Aidan Byrne
It was a top of the table clash against one close to the bottom of the league. As is indicated by the result this game was always going to be painful to Crowborough. All season they have struggled with player numbers and even 10 minutes before kick off did not know if they were going to have 15 starters. On the other hand Lewes had a full complement and ran out extremely capable winners.
Crowborough did start the sharper of the two sides and kept the score level for ten minutes – but then the floodgates opened with tries from Gunn, Dean, Hillman, Rawson and Callaghan. Lewes scored five tries in the first half and six in the second half. With three conversions this brought the tally to 63 points to nil.
Crowborough should be complimented on their performance. They kept on trying against the determined running from the Lewes backs and pounding they took up front from the Lewes forwards. The last five minutes were spent on the Lewes line when the valiantly tried in vain to get a consolation try.
NEXT WEEK: Lewes Colts are in the final of the Sussex U18 cup against Worthing. This is also a double header as the winner is also going to be playing Brighton in the final of the U 18 league. The venue is Haywards Heath 12:00 noon, your support would be much appreciated if you can make it.
Scorers for Lewes: Raff Gunn (6 tries), Lewis Hart (2 Tties, 1 conversion), Josh Hillman (1 try), Sam Rawson (1 try), Sam Peate (1 try), Ryan Byrne (2 conversions).
Lewes Squad: Tom Hocking, George Dean, Sam Rawson, Tom Pellett, Tom Howell, Lockie Diplock, Stuart Diplock, Christian Vanezi, Charlie Savage, Josh Hillman, Lewis Harte, Aaron White, Sam Peate, Ryan Byrne, Austin Weight, Raff Gunn, Ollie Stables, Ollie Callaghan

Lewes U15s take on London Scottish in 10s
Lewes under 15s travelled to Cobham for the last rugby of their season playing in a 10s tournament against three big London sides Cobham, Esher and London Scottish. After a hard season due to injury and numbers it made a change to travel up with a full squad which proved to be a big factor in just being pipped in the final against London Scottish 3 trys to 2.
Lewes got caught out with two quick trys from Scottish in the first half but pulled one back before half time as they started to dominate the game. This continued in the second half but again they got caught out with a breakaway try from Scottish to go 3-1 down. Still determined they battled on and soon they were rewarded with a try to go 3-2 they continued to dominate the game and in the final minute the backs broke through the defence and the outside centre had a clear run in for the try but un-selfishly decided to pass to his winger who knocked the ball on.
Scottish then had the scrum and were quick to kick the ball into touch to sneak the win. “Although we only just lost, this game was the best rugby we've played all season - congratulations to the team and well done!” says coach Richard Terry.
