Lewes Colts v Pulborough
Score: 38 - 10
The Lewes Colts maintained their winning start to the season beating Pulborough 38 -10 at the Stanley Turner Ground. Played on a sunny September afternoon. The excellent conditions helped make for a nicely flowing game with good running rugby from both sides.
Lewes started the stronger of the two sides and were quickly in the Pulborough 22. After two forward attacks the ball was spread wide and Lewis Harte crossed the line for Lewes on the wing. The Pulborough restart went long so Lewes opted for the scrum on the half way. Breaking on the blind, Raff Gunn passed to Ryan Byrne who ran through the despairing Pulborough defence to pass back to Gunn who scored under the posts and Harte converted. Another attack on the left hand side saw Harte cross-field kick the ball that bounced kindly for Gunn who scored just left of the posts. From the kick-off and with Lewes attacking from deep – Pulborough intercepted a pass and score an individual soft try. Theo Tyrer, who made some telling runs in the game, scored a try straight after the kick-off. The forwards won the kickoff ball and broke right to get the ball through many pairs of hands before giving it to Theo to score in the corner. Another 10 minutes of attacking rugby say Byrne finish off a good move scoring just left of the posts.
Playing with the wind in the second half Pulborough fared much better. They spend the first 10 minutes in the Lewes 22 and left with three points from a converted penalty. However then Lewes produced a most exquisite back move and showed they can play beautiful rugby. From a scrum on the half way line Austin Weight (out half) pulled a sweet dummy miss pass that fooled all the Pulborough defenders and gave the ball to Harte in lots of space. He ran the half the length of the pitch to score in the corner stepping the fullback in the process. In the final quarter Lewes made many positional changes and did not play with the same discipline and organization. On three or four occasions final scoring passes did not go to hand. Ned Barker was unfortunate not to score when the referee said that he was held up over the line.
Scorers for Lewes Ryan Byrne, (1 try), Lewis Harte (two tries, 4 conversions), Theo Tyrer (1 tries), Raff Gunn (2 tries),
Lewes Squad: George Dean, Sam Rawson, Matt Jones, Lockie Diplock, Stuart Diplock, Tom Pellett, Aaron White, , Josh Hillman, Lewis Harte, Theo Tyrer, Christian Vaneze, Dom Burns, Dom Wiseman, Ryan Byrne, Ned Barker, Raff Gunn, Austin Weight.
Lewes U15 v Brighton U15
Score: 7-37
Report by: Declan Dickens
The clouds and wind abated for Sunday’s Sussex A division junior league match between Lewes and Brighton and sunshine greeted the two teams as they ran out onto the pitch. Brighton fresh from winning the Sussex A league last year and Lewes newly promoted from the B league. The match began with sustained forward pressure from Brighton following the kick off and good rucking pressure from their backs saw them open the scoring with barely five minutes on the clock, no conversion. Lewes began the restart well and pushed Brighton back into their own 20 metre line but again lost possession in a ruck Brighton recycled the ball quickly to the wing who ran from 40 metres for the second visitors second try, again no conversion. Lewes began to relive memories of last years friendly game that saw Brighton win emphatically 55 - 5 but this year heads did not drop. The first half ended with 3 further tries no conversions and a score of 25 nil.
Lewes and Brighton made a few changes at half time, with Brighton giving subs a chance to play and Lewes looking to stem the flow, and for a while it was Lewes who kept the ball and ran at Brighton, while some determined tackling put pressure on the Brighton defence who twice denied Lewes a push over. Again it was Brighton who showed superior passing and once the ball was given to either wing, two further tries were scored in quick succession with this time one being converted, score now 37 nil. But in a reversal of the last game between these two sides Lewes heads remained up and a ball was kicked through for new Lewes player Jack Burrell to score a consolation try. This was followed by an excellent conversion by Tom Pitt and so the match ended Lewes 7 Brighton 37.
Brighton look like the team beat again this year and Lewes had confirmation of just how much and where they need to improve.
Horsham U13 v Lewes U13
Score: 30 – 5
Report by Ron Sillett
Well, what a wake up call Lewes had with three ties, one converted and a penalty against them in the first half in their first league game of the season. Lewes had some butter-finger knock forwards and a few missed tackles showing that they were not hungry enough for the ball.
The second half was a different story with two tries to Horsham and one to Lewes scored by William Powell proving that he is one of the fasted runners in Sussex, scoring from the half way line down the wing and under the posts. Logan Collins added a bit more aggression to the pack with Harvey Collier playing his fist full match at hooker. Horsham were a very well drilled team and deserve there Sussex top spot but Lewes are not far behind.
