Lewes Colts  vs Worthing Colts
Score: 15 – 0
Match report by Aidan Byrne

What a way to finish the season. Lewes Colts beat Worthing Colts in the Sussex County Final held in the neutral venue of Haywards Heath. Played in a continual drizzle Lewes came out worth winners and should be rightfully proud of an excellent season.

Lead from the front by George Dean everyone in the squad was a hero. 90% of the first half was played in the Lewes 22 and most of that seemed to be from the five yard line to the try line. Worthing managed to get over the Lewes try line five times in the first half but failed to ground the ball once. One incident in the first half, for me, typifies this team’s attitude and spirit. Tom Pellett, the Lewes Prop had an operation recently to straighten his nose, he had broken it in a previous game. 10 minutes into the game he smacked his nose on one of the opposition and was bleeding profusely and rebroken. The Lewes physio came on to the pitch to stem the flow of blood. While Tom was receiving this attention he noticed that Worthing were attacking and had a two man overlap and they were in a very good scoring position. Tom dispensed with the medical attention to rush and do an excellent tackle and helped stop that particular Worthing attack. He then got his nose seen to – I am not sure how effective cotton wool and vaseline is but it seemed to do the trick.

The half-time score of 0 – 0 was a big positive physiological advantage for Lewes. For all the territorial advantage with the wind and hill in their favor Worthing had failed to score. Worthing were still dominate in the forwards but the better open running of the Lewes backs meant they have a more threat in attack. Raff Gunn scored a brilliant penalty by confusing the opposition, his team mates and most of the spectators when he went over for a great individual try from a penalty move. I am sure when that move was practiced in training it involved passing the ball to one of the Lewes bigger forwards and did not involve a trip up and skip. Either way it counted. His second try was more orthodox when he was fed the ball from the back of a scrum and won the sprint to touch down, in fairness, he did also have to evade the despairing attempts at being tackled by three Worthing defenders. Billie Filmer finished off the scoring for Lewes by going over in the corner, again with three Worthing defenders on his back.

Josh Sheppard won the MAN OF THE MATCH award. While Shep had his usual high standard game with excellent tackles and deceptive lazy runs, so did EVERYONE else and rather than name them all – the squad is listed below and they all should be extremely proud of themselves.

Now all that remains for the season is the League final, which the administrators have to sort out the venue, the date and the participants.

Scorers for Lewes: Raff Gunn (2 trys), Billie Filmer (1 try)

Lewes Squad: George Dean (Captain), Billie Filmer, Lockie Diplock, Stuart Diplock, Tom Pellett , Aaron White, Danny Hemsley, Josh Hillman, Joshua Sheppard,  Lewis Harte, Christian Vaneze,  Raff Gunn, Austin Weight, Ollie Callaghan, Ollie Stables, Tom Hocking, Charlie Savage, Sam Peate, Theo Tyrer, Ryan Byrne, Owen Lewis, Sam Rawson, Tom Howell
