Mens - Second XV
Lewes 43 Plumpton 17
Lewes 2nd's continued their impressive form this season, at home to local rivals, Plumpton 1st's, in their Sussex Intermediate League match, eventually running out comfortable winners by 43 - 17.
It took the hosts only 1 minute to open the scoring, a Plumpton player knocking -on from the kick-off, giving immediate possession to Lewes who worked the ball out for centre Nick Sharp to touch down for the opening try, converted by outside-half Jordan Wythe, to make it 7 - 0. On 3 minutes, however, Plumpton fought back and were awarded a penalty for offside which scrum-half and captain Lewis Beale slotted over to narrow the score to 7 - 3. But from this point on, Lewes began to dominate all phases of the game, running up tries almost at will. Their second came after 10 minutes, winger Barney Jordan breaking through the centre of Plumpton's defence to set up hooker James Read for a fine try near the posts, but the missed conversion meant Lewes's lead was only 12 - 3 at this point.
They broke away to 17 - 3 some 12 minutes later, winning a line-out on the left before switching the ball out to the right for Sharp to score his second, but also unconverted, try and stretched their lead to 24 - 3 after 36 minutes with No. 8 Callum Armstrong picking up loose ball afer Lewes pressure to touch down in the left corner, Wythe's fine conversion adding the extras. The half ended with Lewes well on top,a great attacking move in which Read and Ben Stechler were prominent ending with scrum-half James Stenning scoring an excellent team try, with another fine conversion by Wythe, to go in 31 - 3 at the break.
The seond half saw Plumpton come more into the game,as Lewes tired and brought on their substitutes. But it was the home side who scored first after only 1 minute into the second half, centre John Smith touching down under the posts following an impressive move between forwards and backs, Wythe's conversion making it 38 - 3. After 55 minutes, another flowing attack was rewarded with Nick Sharp's hat-trick try wide out left, the conversion missing but seeing Lewes's lead extend to 43 - 3.
Plumpton now embarked on a rare attack deep inside Lewes's half, and their efforts paid off some 10 minutes from the end when their flanker, Ben Carter, scored near the posts, Beale's conversion making it 43 - 10.The visitors in fact scored the last points of the match to add some respectability to a game in which they never gave up, playing with spirit and entusiaism, before their outside-half, James Burgess, rounded off the match with a try near the posts, converted by Beale, to make the final score 43 - 17.
