Lewes Colts v Bognor
Score: 29 - 0
Report by Aidan Byrne

The Lewes Colts continue their fine league campaign with a third victory and bonus points at Bognor RFC. Even though they had a number of injuries to key players they had a good win over Bognor, proving that this team is a squad of excellent all round ability.

In the first three minutes Raff Gunn scored for Lewes which Lewis Harte converted. Bognor kicked long and Lewes ran the ball back from their 22 and after a quick ruck in the midfield Danny Hemsley ran straight through the Bognor defence and, after committing, the fullback gave the ball to Gunn who had a simple task to put the ball down left of the posts. Four minutes later after Aaron White fielded a kick Lewes attacked again and when the play stopped Lewes had a scrum down on the Bognor 5 metre line. Lewes went left from the scrum and when Harte was stopped just short of the line Seb Lampard was at hand to finish off the move and score under the posts. Ten minutes into the game Lewes were 14 – 0 up and it could have been a disaster for Bognor but they managed to stop the rot and play with more structure and organization.

Some fine tackling by Lewes stopped potential try scoring opportunities however when Bognor missed a simple penalty kick just right of the posts you could see it was not going to be their day. Harte scored a fine try in the corner after some nice play from Lewes on the left wing. Dom Burns having made good ground was stopped short of the line and after three quick rucks Gunn passed to Harte who barged over the line for a good touch line try. The score was 24 – 0 at half time with George Dean scoring just before half time when a penalty move saw the forward barge over for an unsophisticated, yet effective, score.

The second went much better for Bognor who attacked with more authority and better communication saw their passing along the backline more aggressive. Lewes were solid in defense with good tackles from Connor Diplock and Lockey who toiled hard for the whole game. The sole Lewes score was from the captain George Dean, leading by example, who finished off a nice move which started in the Lewes half and the ball seemed go through every member of the Lewes team.

Lewes introduced an international flavor to their side playing Ryohei Ishida in the front row. Ryohei, coming from Japan, is in England to learn English and has just started playing rugby. For someone who has just started he had an excellent game and deserved the Man of the Match award.

Scorers for Lewes: George Dean, (2 tries), Lewis Harte (One try, 2 conversions), Seb Lampard (1 try), Raff Gunn (1 try)

Lewes Squad: George Dean, Sam Rawson, Ryohei Ishida, Lockie Diplock, Stuart Diplock, Aaron White, Tom Hocking, Matt Jones, Lewis Harte, Theo Tyrer, Christian Vanezi, Dom Burns, Dom Wiseman, Danny Hemsley, Ryan Byrne, Raff Gunn, Austin Weight, Seb Lampard.

Lewes U15 v Hastings U15
Score: 39 - 0
Report by: Declan Dickens

Lewes welcomed Hastings to the Stanley Turner ground looking to improve on the previous week’s heavy League defeat by Brighton. An altogether more confident looking Lewes side lined up against a physical looking Hastings and elected to change ends. Lewes’ passing shone from the outside with long accurate passes along the backs stretching Hastings’ defence and resulted in the first try within three minutes of the start. No conversion was made due to the distance from the posts. This marked the onset of continued pressure by the Lewes backs and a further five tries and one conversion were scored by the time the referee blew for half time.

Five more tries plus a conversion saw Lewes sitting on a total of 32 points. Hastings began the second half in a determined mood and for most of the second half looked like the team most likely to score. Perhaps the Lewes team had forgotten the first half formula of possession, recycle quickly out to the backs. Hastings took advantage of this by keeping Lewes’ forwards busy and upping attempts to dominate the pack.

Lewes U14 v Hastings U14
Score: 91 - 12

Lewes U13 v Hastings U13
Score: 5 – 19
Report by Ron Sillett

A friendly home game in which Hastings had all the possession putting on pressure for the first 10 minutes with both sides very even with Albert Harvey doing some great defensive kicking. From one of his kicks Lewes gained a lineout in Hastings’ 22 and James McKeown burst over for a fine try which was not converted.

Just before half time Hastings had a kick forward under the Lewes posts after which Lewes played the rest of the squad that had not played. Robert Fogerty continued to lead the pack.

In the second half in a fine display of forward rugby Lewes conceded two tries, one being converted. It was a good all-round display by both sides which should see Lewes in good spirits for the next League game in two weeks time against Worthing.
